Dr Anthony J Palmer
Funding postgraduate research for members of St Cuthbert’s Society
Dr Anthony (Tony) J Palmer (St Cuthbert’s Society) graduated from Durham University with both a BSc (1964) and a PhD (1967) in Chemistry, before going on to have an interesting scientific career, working on isotopes for X-rays.
Tony was a proud alumnus of St Cuthbert’s Society and continued to keep in touch with his College after graduating, attending many events there. Like many who study at Durham, Tony had strong ties to his College, so he left a gift in his will to support postgraduate researchers at St Cuthbert’s Society. This gift has been used to create the Dr Anthony J Palmer Postgraduate Award. This is an annual scholarship to provide help towards living costs and tuition fees for postgraduate researchers of any discipline who are in the first year of their programme.
This award is a testament to the enduring legacy, both intellectual and philanthropic, of one of our most distinguished alumni. Dr Palmer’s lifelong curiosity, his commitment to scientific advancement, and his affection for St Cuthbert’s Society continue to inspire us. Thanks to his kind bequest, we are now able to support the next generation of researchers—across all disciplines—as they embark on their academic journeys. The award not only alleviates financial pressures but also affirms the value we place on postgraduate scholarship within our community. We are deeply honoured to carry Dr Palmer’s name forward in this way.
